Project Next Generation

The Brimfield Public Library has been awarded the Project Next Generation Grant by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White for the second year in a row. Project Next Generation (PNG) is an initiative that strives to empower young people ages 10-18 by giving them access to new technologies, technology training, and mentors.

PNG workshops at the Brimfield Public Library currently focus on 3D design, 3D printing, photography, and filmmaking. Check out the Events below, our Facebook page, call 309-446-9575, or email khahn@brimfieldlibrary.org for more information about upcoming workshops. Workshops are free, but participants must register. Students can also stop by the library and talk to staff about how they can use our 3D printers, cameras, computers, and design software during after school and weekend open lab hours.

Funding for PNG is provided through a Library Services and Technology Act Grant administered by the Illinois State Library using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. You can visit the State Library of Illinois for more information about PNG.

Photography and Videography

The Brimfield Public Library currently has six Canon Rebel T5i cameras and eight laptops equipped with Adobe Creative Suite, as well as a small photography studio setup in the Maker Lab available for students to use during PNG workshops and open lab hours. Students can attend workshops lead by area photographers and videographers to learn a wide range of skills related to creating and editing digital images and films.  Additionally, students can come to the library during after school and weekend open lab hours and use the cameras and studio setup to refine their skills.

Illinois Veterans History Project

The Brimfield Public Library is partnering with the Illinois State Library to film the remembrances of veterans and civilians who served our state and country during war, so that their contribution will not be forgotten.  Teens ages 13-18 can participate by running the camera during an interview or preparing interview questions and conducting the actual interview. Recordings submitted to the Illinois Veterans History Project will be placed in the Illinois Digital Archives.

Check the Events schedule for upcoming Interview Prep sessions or contact Katie to learn more about how you can be invovled: khahn@brimfieldlibrary.org.

3D Design and Printing

The Brimfield Public Library has two LulzBot 3D printers, a wide variety of PLA and Ninjaflex filaments, and ten laptops equipped with free Autodesk 123D design software available for students to use during 3D design and printing workshops and open lab hours. Students can attend librarian led workshops to learn how to download pre-made 3D designs, create their own designs, and prepare the 3D printers for printing.  Additionally, students can check out laptops during open lab hours and work on their design skills independently.  3D printers can only be used under staff or mentor supervision.
